We’re delighted to welcome Ben Walters to FuturEnergy Ireland, who has joined us as an intern for six months supporting our Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) team.
Ben is a fourth‑year Engineering with Management student at Trinity College Dublin. He has a keen interest in renewable energy production and storage, and has explored topics such as pumped hydro storage and photovoltaic power generation through his studies.
We sat down with Ben to learn more about his background, his interest in green energy and what he’s most looking forward to during his placement at FuturEnergy Ireland.
Tell us a little bit about yourself
Hey! My name is Ben, I’m a 22-year-old college student undertaking a six month internship at FuturEnergy Ireland. My passions are the sciences, music, and playing any card games with friends (although poker is a personal favourite!).
What are you studying in college and how does it tie in with your work at FuturEnergy Ireland?
As a fourth-year engineering with management student in Trinity College Dublin, I have opted to continue down the energy stream, which I chose because I know the world of renewable energy production and storage still has so much untapped potential. Not only has my college course prepared me for this internship by introducing me to Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) and renewable energy generation, but it has also expanded my mind to the countless possibilities, and challenges, associated with the world of renewable energy.
What will you be working on in FuturEnergy Ireland?
Throughout the course of my internship, I will be assisting Joseph Kelly, the LDES Development Manager, in advancing the company’s LDES portfolio. This will involve screening potentially viable sites and helping to prepare and submit applications for grants and planning submissions.
What are you most looking forward to on your placement with FuturEnergy Ireland?
I am most excited to deepen my understanding of how energy, and in particular green energy, is managed and supplied to the Irish grid, and learning more about the shortcomings of our grid that need to be addressed. I am also just as excited to work with professionals who are at the forefront of pushing Ireland towards carbon neutrality, and who are down-to-earth and ready to help me out with anything I need!
